Identifying and Addressing Bias in AI: Towards Fair and Ethical Systems
Ángel Pavón Pérez began his academic journey at the University of Córdoba, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Software Engineering. He then pursued a Master’s in Artificial Intelligence at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, where he researched radicalised online communities, particularly the manosphere. His work examined how extremist narratives spread online and the factors that drive hostile discussions towards women.
In 2021, Ángel joined the Knowledge Media Institute (KMi) at The Open University as a PhD researcher in collaboration with VISA Europe. His research focused on bias in AI systems, particularly gender bias in financial services, investigating how these systems may unintentionally disadvantage minoritised groups, identifying biases within the data used to train Machine Learning models and exploring ways to mitigate these harms.
Now, as a Research Associate at the Centre for Protecting Women Online, Ángel continues his work in Responsible AI, focusing on developing AI technologies that enhance online safety for women. His research is dedicated to ensuring AI systems are designed and deployed ethically, with a strong commitment to using responsible AI to protect minoritised communities.
